A biopsy of deeper tissue layers can either be performed through the skin (transcutaneous) or with a small skin incision (for example when using large biopsy needles). Before entering the biopsy needle, the skin needs to be desinfected and if necessary local anaesthesia is applied.Biopsy needles are introduced either by palpation, that is without sight control ("blind"), or under sight control with imaging devices.
