A surcical incision is needed for purulent bursits. In all other cases a conservative treatment with anti-inflammatory measures (e.g. cold packs), oral NSAR, elastic bandage and immobilization with a cast is indicated. If necessary a puncture and drainage of the bursa as well as instillation of glucocorticoids can be performed.
