What is post exposure prophylaxis or PEP?
When a person has unprotected sex with an infected person, the healthy person is at risk of developing HIV infection. Post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is the method of taking anti retro viral medications after such a potential exposure to the HIV to prevent being infected with HIV. It is taken in an emergency situation and needs to be taken within 72 hours of potential exposure.
Should be used only in emergency situations and is not ideal for people potentially exposed to HIV frequently.
